Istanbul Airport’s 4th Main Runway Enters Service
Istanbul Airport’s 4th main runway, which will increase the airport’s operational capacity, will officially enter service on September 18 with a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
According to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the new runway is expected to enable a new operational phase in which four aircraft can simultaneously take off and land.
TARGET: 9 RUNWAYS AND 200 MILLION PASSENGERS
Istanbul Airport currently operates with 3 main and 2 backup runways, for a total of 5. With the new east-west runway, the total will increase to 6 runways. The long-term plan is to reach 9 runways: 6 main and 3 backup.
The airport’s ultimate passenger capacity target is 200 million passengers.
SAVING TIME AND FUEL
The new runway, measuring 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide, is expected to reduce taxiing and airborne times, particularly for eastbound flights.
This is expected to provide savings in both time and fuel while improving the efficiency of air traffic operations.
