General Information on Residence Permits

Ensuring consistency in the implementation of national and international law is important in terms of preventing human rights violations and establishing a system that respects human dignity. Within this framework, foreigners residing in our country have various rights and obligations. Residence permits provide a legal basis for foreigners to stay in Türkiye within the framework of these rights and obligations.

According to Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection (LFIP), a residence permit is defined as a permit document issued to foreigners who intend to stay in Türkiye. This permit document, issued by the competent authorities, grants foreigners the right to live in our country for a certain period of time and at a specific location. Residence permits, which are important for maintaining and protecting public order, are issued when a foreigner submits an application with the required documents and meets the conditions for the type of residence permit requested.

A residence permit is a permit document issued to foreigners who wish to stay in Türkiye. Foreigners who intend to stay in Türkiye for longer than the period granted by their visa or visa exemption, or for more than 90 days, are required to apply through the e-Residence system for the type of residence permit for which they believe they meet the requirements.

Foreigners who complete their application must be present on the appointment date determined by the system at the Provincial/District Directorate of Migration Management in the province where they intend to live. Foreigners who fail to appear at the Provincial/District Directorate of Migration Management on the appointment date without a valid excuse shall be deemed not to have applied at all. The administration may request certain information and documents to determine whether there is a valid excuse. Residence permit extension applications are, as a rule, submitted through the same procedure.
